Shalom Residential Public School conducts summer camp

Shalom Residential Public School, Chittur, has organized a ‘Summer Camp” at the school campus on April 20 – May 2, 2009. Students, who are in VI to IX Std attended the programme, which offered a splendid opportunity to utilize the vacation more effectively with prominent educationalists. Highly qualified and trained faculties drawn from all over India lead different sessions of the camp.
The camp was specially designed for the students to increase their self awareness, to develop self esteem, to raise academic performance and to refine and sharpen language skill. Shalom School Summer Camp provided students with real opportunities for global learning, connections, friendship and shared fun. Topics covered in the camp include “Career Guidance, Sanskrit, Magic with Maths, Time Management & How to achieve our destiny, Problem of Adulthood, Effective Communication etc.
The summer camp also effectively dealt with the academic issues such as adolescent concerns, techniques of time management, methods and steps to success, life planning and career guidance, Wonders of Mathematics, Mysteries of Science, the beauty of English and other related topics.
The Camp proved to be a challenging experience to the students. They often find themselves struggling to find out who they are, what they're good at and what group of friends they fit in with. At Shalom School Summer Camp, students discovered their individual learning styles and developed skills for dealing with a heavier academic schedule. They also learnt how to participate in "real-life" activities that enable them to make responsible choices and win the support, understanding and guidance of teachers and parents. And, of course, they were able to make friendships with students from across the country, discovered their talents and strengths and prepared for their transition into secondary school. Shalom Summer School Camp was also a great bridge into the future where students can build upon their learning and life skills fundamentals and personal character development by continuing to explore ‘Keys of Excellence'.

Shalom Residential Public School (SRPS) has organized a seminar on “Learning disabilities in children” on February 28 at hotel Kapilavasthu, at Palakkad. The programme evinced considerable interest among the students, parents and teachers and the hall was packed to capacity as teachers from different schools along with students and parents participated in the programme.

The thrust area of the seminar was Dyslexia, a common issue agitating the minds of students as well as parents. Mrs.Mythreyi Venugopal, with her deep knowledge and experience on the subject, has gone deep into the subject and addressed the concept effectively. Interacting with the audience, she touched upon on the social, mental and physical aspects of dyslexia and ways of early identification and remedial measures required for this vital issue. “Dyslexia is not a disease and the dyslexic are not slow learners or mentally challenged, she explained. The common symptom of Dyslexia is the difficulty with letter and language. If diagnosed at the initial stage, the child can be treated effectively, leading to a normal life. Another aspect of the problem is the stigma associated with Dyslexia among the parents and teachers. Care should be taken to remove the misunderstanding and stigma from their mind, so that it can be diagnosed smoothly and treated effectively. She suggested practical methods to teachers and parents to handle the dyslexics. Concessions and support available to the dyslexic school children are not fully utilized or availed in many cases as they are not fully aware of the existing facilities in this area.

The question and answer session at the end of the day was very live and useful as it helped to clear the doubts of the participants. A number of questions have been raised by the participants which were addressed satisfactorily. There was a consensus that awareness programmes should be organized to educate all those involved in it. Our ultimate aim should be to ensure that children do not suffer from isolation, disillusionment, or embarrassment.
